1st  Bowood Balloon Festival

25th May – 28th May 2007

Bowood House is a stately home that is also a family home and that mix of historical treasures in well loved surroundings gives this Georgian House a unique charm felt by everyone who visits. The Lansdowne family have lived at Bowood since 1754.

The first Bowood House Balloon Festival was held over the late May Bank Holiday weekend within ‘Capability’ Brown’s glorious parklands.

A Press Day had been arranged for the Friday and with kind permission of the Lansdowne family five balloons gathered on the front lawn with the Somerfield Balloon G-SFSL taking centre stage in the line up prior to ‘hopping’ across the lake with the daughter of Lord Lansdowne as passenger.

At the evening Press Call ten balloons once again gathered in front of the house before taking off in gentle winds with a direction allowing five pilots the opportunity to ‘splash and dash’ in the lake.

When the gates opened to the public at 4.30pm approximately 1000 cars entered the car park in the first hour with a queue back to the main road. The Ikea hopper and the Redrow balloon tethered in the main event arena before 6pm when four members of the Red Devils Parachute Display Team (sponsored for the weekend by Somerfield) parachute from 3500 feet into the arena followed by The Chariots of Fire Display Team by Amanda Saville and at dusk a fire stunt display from the Over the Top Motor Cycle Stunt Team from Swindon. The finale to the days’ programme was an impressive firework display choreographed to music from the far side of the lake.

Typical English Bank Holiday weather prevailed all night and into Sunday and a decision to cancel Sunday’s planned programme of events was taken. By opening time on Monday the weather had eased and a programme of arena events entertained a good crowd.
